The Green Card System
The Green Card System is a protection mechanism for victims of cross-border road traffic accidents. Lithuania is one of the country of the Green Card System and is represented by Motor Insurers’ Bureau of the Republic of Lithuania.
The Green card System consists of 46 member countries represented by 46 National Insurers’ Bureaux.
The main objectives of the Green Card System are:
- to avoid the need for motorists to obtain insurance cover at each of the frontiers of the 46 member countries. The motorist is released from the obligation of taking out a national insurance contract at the border of each Green Card System country, if possessing a Green Card;
- to ensure that third party victims of road traffic accidents are not prejudiced by the fact that injuries or damage sustained by them were caused by a visiting motorist rather than a motorist resident in the same country.
The Council of Bureaux (CoB) is the organization, which acts for the protection of cross-border road traffic victims by coordinating the activities of all National Motor Insurers’ Bureaux that are members of the Green Card System.
